A group of 50-plus aged guys got together earlier this year and started what is believed to be the first Walking Football Club in New Zealand. Originating in the UK, the rules are slightly different from those of outdoor football, but the concept is the same – playing football. You’re just not allowed to run.

Founder of the local club, Steve Clark, says that Walking Football is a variant of association football that is aimed to keep people aged over 50 involved in the sport.

It is one of the fastest-growing sports in the UK, and from small beginnings here in the region, the regular numbers at the club are increasing with new friendships being formed every week.

On Wednesday, 25 September, the club will hold its first Prostate Cup Fundraising Tournament at the Hope Hall from 6pm, with all proceeds being donated to the Blue September Prostate Cancer awareness fund. It is a 5-a-side tournament and a team entry is $50.
