Takaka’s brand new squash complex is fantasic. Late last year the club moved from their old and tired one court club into their shiny new facilities. As part of the new Takaka recreation centre, they now boast two modern courts and a booming membership. So it seemed right to support Takaka in their first squash tournament in their new building.
The Takaka Open was held over Queen’s Birthday weekend, it proved popular with 65 entries. Of those, a large contingent of 19 members from Waimea Squash Club made the trip over the hill to play. The event promised just the right mix of on-court competitivness and off-court social atmosphere.
The calibre of players competing at the tournament was very strong. However Waimea players were in-form during the weekend, digging deep to win games and take out both the Men’s and Ladies Open divisions.
In a tense Men’s Open final, Henry Aitken of Waimea played Paul Moran of Marlborough and won the match 3-0.
In the Ladies Open final, Christine Palmer beat Jodie Backhouse, both of Waimea Squash Club.
