Each year, Murchison Area School celebrate Arts Week at the end of term two.
Sarah Peacock, deputy principal of Murchison Area School, says, “It’s purpose is to recognise the value of the arts and to foster the understanding that when we are creative, it grows and develops parts of the brain that we use for non-creative activities. So, the arts are very important.”
A week of activities is put on by individual classes that are open to the public, which other classes go along to, in support.
“This year we had drama workshops, singing sessions, folk dancing, recorder sessions, poetry recitals, rakau games, slam poetry presentations and dance poetry presentations. We also had a gallery set up in our library which was open to the public, showing art from our new entrant’s class right through to year 11.”
The highlight of the week is the ‘Step Up’ concert – a non-competitive Talent Quest, which had a programme full of items from classes, individuals, groups and even the staff put a piece together.
The week was rounded off with a celebration assembly.
