Excitement is building ahead of the Nelson Speedway Association’s 50th anniversary celebrations set for Labour weekend.
“We’re all really looking forward to it, lots of work has been going on in the background and preparations are well underway,” says secretary and life member, Shara Higgins.
It was in 1968 when The Tasman Car Scramble Club was formed, and the first race meeting held that November at their site on Lansdowne Rd in Richmond, where the Speedway Association remains today.
Since then the Nelson Speedway Association has been widely regarded as the number one club-run track in the country and over the decades has attracted thousands to our region.
Now the association is calling on all past and present members, competitors, pit crew, volunteers and supporters to earmark the 19-21 October to join in the anniversary celebrations that kick off on the Friday with an evening ‘meet and greet’.
Around 20 historic stock cars will be displayed on Saturday, October 20, alongside today’s variety of speedway vehicles – stockcars, saloons, open wheelers and sidecars, at the free entry ‘Show and Shine Display’, from 11am-3pm. The 50th Anniversary Race Meeting will include more than 20 historic stockcars from around New Zealand and will begin at 6pm, followed by the prize-giving in the club rooms.
Registrations are drifting in from members nationwide and Shara says they expect around 200 people to attend the Sunday night Anniversary Dinner.
