A total of 340 kgs of rubbish was removed in a mornings work from our local shorelines recently. A team of 15 members from the ‘Keep Richmond Beautiful’ organisation found rubbish such as car parts, iron, synthetic material and even electric oil heaters, along with two large fence posts.

“Some of the items collected included a vehicle exhaust system and the rest was what you would expect, for maybe the full disposable nappy (diaper) and the plastic bags containing dog poo,” says Ron Argue, Chairman of ‘Keep Richmond Beautiful’.
The ‘Big Beach Clean Up’ was done from Fittal Street to Best Island and the group was surprised by the amount of trash collected, but it was down on the amount of rubbish collected in previous years.

“We only did this six months ago and I’m still quite surprised by how much we’ve got in since then,” says Ron. “We’ve picked up a lot of stuff, but not as many plastic bags as expected. There were lots of them in the past,” he says.

‘Keep Richmond Beautiful work started back in the early ’90s and the ‘Big Beach Clean Up’s’ has been on-going for about six years.

“I do it because I am retired and I wanted to give something back to the community and cleanness stimulates cleanness,” says Ron.
