The McKee Memorial Recreation Reserve campsite at Ruby Bay will reopen on Friday, October 19, in time for campers to enjoy a long weekend at the popular site.
A Tasman District Council spokesperson says initially numbers will be limited to 100 – 150 people. They explain that the reason for the reduced camping numbers is to allow the council to test the newly upgraded sewage system and gather data that will determine how many people the system can comfortably support.
They say if the results from the first couple of weeks of data is positive they hope to be able to increase camping numbers closer to their pre-storm levels in time for the Christmas holiday period.
McKee campground has been closed for camping since a large storm in February. After a big clean-up effort and upgrades to the sewerage and stormwater systems, the camp will once more offer a low-cost family camping option.
