One thing this group of retirees all have in common is a love of travel and socialising. And even though Covid has stopped them from travelling overseas to stay with host members in Japan, Costa Rica and beyond, staycations have become a regular part of their activities. Jocelyn Clarke, from Friendship Force New Zealand, says, “The group has members all over the world, and the idea is we go and stay with each other on holiday exchanges. You stay at the host’s home and they show you the best places in their area. Then next time, it’s our turn to host.”

As well as an opportunity to see the country from a local’s point of view, it’s a safe way of travelling and a great way of making new friends. This week the Nelson team played host to a group from the North Island’s Manawatu and Whanganui. “They are staying with us here in Richmond, Brightwater and surrounds, and we have a packed itinerary of things to do while they are here.” On the first day, they enjoyed lunch at Gardens of the World before setting off for Abel Tasman on day two. “The Top of the South has so much to offer, we’ll be pretty busy,” says Jocelyn.

Anyone can join the group and they are keen to get more members on board in the ‘late 50s plus’ age bracket. “It would be great to get some new members involved who love meeting people, the great outdoors, and socialising with like-minded retirees,” says Jocelyn.
