There’s a new sport in town for women that’s all about having fun, making friends and getting fit, and welcomes women of all fitness levels and ages. Catchball has its origins in the States where it was created in the late 1800’s as a warm-up game for volleyball.
In 2008 it was introduced to Israel where it took off and currently has 15,000 women playing every week.
“It’s a nice way to get out of the house and meet other ladies,” says Nelson Bays Catchball club committee member, Monique Clayworth.
A team sport played on a volleyball court where you can catch, pass, then throw the ball over the net, the club in Richmond was established in January this year and they’d like to attract more women who are keen to play competitively or just for fun.
The not-for-profit club currently has 22 members and a few casuals who get together for training on Wednesday evenings from 6.30-7.30pm and Friday evenings from 6-7.30pm, at Richmond’s Badminton Club on Gladstone Rd.
The sport is year-round and those involved say it’s a great way for women to connect, feel empowered and do something for themselves. All women are invited to attend a free training session and check out this exciting new sport.
