The building of a Countdown supermarket on the corner of Champion Road and Salisbury Road will mean temporary changes to traffic flow at the roundabout central to these roads.

“We have looked at ways to manage traffic during construction,” says Tasman District Council’s transportation manager, Jamie McPherson.

Work will start in January, and they hope to have it completed in June/July 2021.

One short-term change will be no right turn at the Champion Road roundabout for those coming from Nelson.

To ensure ease of access to the Aquatic Centre, Raeward Fresh and surrounding businesses, a temporary one-way road is being built to allow traffic to turn left into the area from the deviation.

Aquatic Centre marketing manager, Crystal Gaiger, says the process has been positive as there was a lot of consultation with them and there will still be access for their customers.

Before Christmas, work will also be done on the water mains in this area.

Because there is a higher risk of water contamination while mains are worked on, water will temporarily be treated with chlorine.

The ‘no right turn’ access off the deviation, and water chlorination are all temporary measures while work is being carried out on the water mains and roads.
