The Tasman Dog Pound is offering free microchipping in November for dogs registered in the Tasman District.
“The best chance we have of reuniting lost pets with their owners is if they have a microchip,” says John Griffiths from Tasman Dog Pound.
Calls to the pound increased dramatically at the weekend because of the fireworks.
“We were called out more than usual because the noise and flashes from fireworks scare the dogs and make them bolt,” says John.
“This is where microchipping is a lifesaver as we can scan the dog at the scene and reunite it with their owner quickly.”
Ross Connochie from the Tasman District Council says that there are currently around 400 dogs who are registered in the region but are yet to get a microchip.
“It’s quick and painless and is the best way for lost pets and owners to be reunited,” says Ross.
