Brightwater’s Mt Heslington Rd will host “an old fashioned, action-packed” hill climb on Sunday. Motocross Events Nelson’s Dan Shallcrass says after trialling the idea last year, the event was back and keen to build on the initial success.

“It’s an old school hill climb,” he says. “We have the lower part of the hill where we will have some head-to-head racing in a knockout scenario. Then we’ll do the King of the Hill where we’ll see how far they can get up the hill, jump on the road and the chicken line and then it’ll get steep with tough terrain.” Action is guaranteed and people will have great views.

“It’s pretty spectacular stuff with bikes flipping over and crashing into the bank so it’s all action. People can get right in there in a safe environment. There hasn’t been a hill climb in 30 years so this is a big year for us. We’ll have some modified bikes there as well. We’ll have at least 50 riders with guys from Blenheim and Christchurch. We had guys come and watch last year who wanted to make sure it wasn’t a bike wrecker. We’ll also have a junior section and we are trying a vintage on as well.”

Shallcrass said he hoped it could become a three-event series next year. If the event is rained off on Sunday, it will be run on Monday instead. Food and drinks will be available for purchase with racing set to occur between 10am and 4pm with gold coin entry.
