Wakefield thespians are set to take the stage toward the end of this month as they produce the famed comedy, ‘Nell Gwynn’. Promising to be a night full of love, laughter and lots of entertainment by the Wakefield Country Players, the show took audiences by storm in its Shakespeare’s Globe London debut.
Prepare to be transported to the flamboyant world of seventeenth-century London, dripping with decadent excess and bawdy amusements. The quick wit and exceptional beauty of Nell Gwynn, played by Lydia Dunne, who goes from selling oranges on the streets of London’s growing theatre district to performing on its stages, captures the hearts of audiences and England’s King Charles II, played by Scott Frater.
Thrust into the royal spotlight, the king’s mistress is dealt a new role as the nation’s sweetheart in this joyous song and dance-filled romantic comedy.
Directed by Nelson’s well-known Hugh Neill, the cast of 19 includes local talent Jen Amosa, Peter Verstappen and Joe Robinson.
Five shows are scheduled with evening shows on the 23, 24, 30 November and December 1 as ‘Picnic shows’ where patrons banquet together bringing their own food, drink, crockery and utensils prior to the show.
Tickets are $20 per adult and can be booked by phoning 541 8869 or emailing bookings@countryplayers.org.nz
