Three local youths, Kathryn Martin, Theo Wheatley and Liam Lloyd, have been chosen to attend the 2019 World Scout Jamboree, in West Virginia, USA.
The trio have compiled a 2019 calendar, using historic Nelson Scout photos, and are selling them to help raise money for the event.
Richmond’s Kathryn says she thoroughly enjoys the scout organisation. She has been in the Nelson Iron Duke Sea Scouts for nearly five years and, along with Theo Wheatley, has achieved the Chief Scout Award – an award which takes four years to complete and is one of the highest a scout can earn.
Both Kathryn and Theo are also on their way to earning the Queen Scout Award – the highest youth award achievable in the Scouting movement in the commonwealth.
“Scouts is a really good confidence builder and we have loads of fun,” says Kathryn, “there is no judgement for doing funny weird things because everyone does weird things there.”
Theo has been a member of the scouts since he was six years old and he is looking forward to attending next year’s jamboree.
“Scouts has given me loads of good opportunities. I have made some really great friends and have learnt a lot of skills.”
The event is to be held at a ranch at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve and is expected to see over 40,000 attendees from all over the world, 70 of whom are from New Zealand.
Bridget Smith, Nelson Zone training leader, says it is quite exceptional to have three people from our zone who are attending.
Calendars are available from the counter at the Richmond Antique Shop, and Eclectic Antique Centre in Nelson, for $20 each.
