Inspiring youth wins the ‘big one’

Cameron Thompson is Nelson Speedway’s youngest competitor to win the Hebberd Cup Sportsperson of the Year award since 1968. The Hebberd Cup is an overall award for all speedway classes in Nelson.
Cameron has raced out of the Nelson club since he turned 12 but it wasn’t until his last season, this past summer, that he achieved his goal of winning a home race – and finishing his youth stock career – on his home track.
The 16-year-old’s nomination was based on his commitment and contribution to the track. It speaks volumes that his peers have, again, voted him as the Nelson Youth Mini-stock Sportsperson of the Year, for the third year running.
MC Wayne Martin read out at the Speedway prize-giving on Saturday, May 19, “There is so much to be said about this young man. He has an enthusiasm level well above most people of his age, and determination to make sure he does the best job possible whether it be as a competitor, a mentor or organiser for class displays and fund-raising. When racing, Cameron isn’t preoccupied on chasing the chequered flag. He has set himself goals throughout the season, of reducing his lap time, consistently placing, and running a clean race.”
Cameron was humbled and a bit shocked to receive the ‘big cup’, wanting to thank everyone who has helped him get to where he is now. “I was nominated for the award alongside some of Nelson Speedways finest drivers, making it that little bit more special.” He now says goodbye to the youth stock mini-class saying it is ‘bittersweet’, “I’ve learnt so much and met so many awesome people. It is a racing class full of young talent. My message for the youth mini-stock drivers of today and the future would be to race for enjoyment and race for the fun of the sport. It’s not how fast you go, it’s about who you are when the helmet comes off.”
